In Five Years

David Michael Newstead | The Philosophy of Shaving

Today, I followed through on something I’d been meaning to do for a while now. I sat down and I wrote two letters. The first was a letter to myself at age eighteen and the second was a letter to myself five years from now. I’ve thought of doing this for months, but really I’m not totally sure of the value of the exercise. I just think it’s easy to feel disconnected from the past. You change incrementally overtime and one day you wake up and life is significantly different. I have to admit it was personally very interesting trying to find the words that could have gotten through to the eighteen-year-old version of myself. And while that part of my life has played itself out obviously, the future is not defined and it’s worth some self-reflection. So, I sat down and wrote one page. Then, I signed and dated the letter, sealed it, and marked the envelope to re-open on July 9, 2019. Hopefully, that perspective will be worth something by then. But that’s really up to me, isn’t it?
